We watched Rufus get in his car and drive away. Then I took down my wards and we went in the house.

“Do you want some tea?” I asked. “Or…”

Collum pulled me against him and kissed me deeply.

When we came up for air, I said, “I was gonna suggest lunch, but this is fine.’” He smiled, and his lips came down on mine again. I stretched my arms up and wrapped them around his neck. He fitted his hands to my butt and pulled me closer. I dropped my hands to the front of his jeans.

We were too far gone to make it to the bedroom. The sofa was not as comfortable, but it was more convenient.

“Well,” I said, when we were both spent.

“I missed you,” he said.

“I guess you did,” I said with a laugh. Then my smile faded. “Listen, Collum. I need to have a way to contact you.”

“Why?”

“Because there were a thousand times that I thought to myself, ‘I need to remember to tell Collum this,’ and now I’ve forgotten all of them.”

“A thousand? Really?”

“Maybe not a thousand. But hundreds of times.”

“Hundreds is a lot.” He planted kisses slowly down my neck.

“It is,” I agreed.

“You taste so good,” he said. “Like a cool drink of water.” He captured my nipple with his lips and teased it with his tongue.

A sigh escaped me. “Are we gonna do this again already?”

“No time like the present,” he said, and reached lower.

Many minutes later, he said, “Now I’m hungry.”

I laughed at him. “I could cook something. Or we could order in.”

He nodded. “Those are the typical choices.” He glanced at me. “Or I could cook you something.”

“You can cook? You’re a man of many talents,” I said, tracing circles on his stomach.

We lay there, pressed together on the sofa, for another few minutes. Then he sighed. “If we don’t get dressed, we’ll never eat.”

“I’m okay here for a while yet. You’re the one who’s hungry.”

He sat up and maneuvered to one end of the sofa. I scooted around and tucked my feet under me.

“It was really hard for me to leave the other night,” he said. “Really hard.”

“You could have stayed,” I said.

“I know. But…” He leaned forward and put his forearms on his knees. “I’ve just been at this for so long on my own.”

I frowned. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

He looked up at me. “I have certain things I’m responsible for. Things I need to keep watch over every day. I just can’t be away for too long. I don’t know what would happen if…”

I was still in the dark. “Are we talking about you staying over, or something else?”

He raised his hands and dropped them again. “This idea of us all getting together and fighting whatever it is. I feel like if we do that, it’ll mean I’m a failure.” He looked up at me again. “I don’t think I’m explaining myself very well.”

“No, I think I get it,” I said slowly. “If you need help, it feels like you’re a failure.
